As the Chinese motorcycle industry improves and advances I take a look at some of the technology required to develop its motorcycles. Here we detail the foremost manufacturers of ABS (advanced) braking systems.

The international motorcycle anti-lock braking system (ABS) marketplace is still in its embryonic stage and is projected to witness strong growth during the forecast period. This prediction is based on the mandate issued by governments worldwide stating that ABS technology be installed as a standard feature in motorcycles above 125 cc displacement.

The prediction is also based on anticipated push from the demand side due to increasing safety concerns among motorcycle customers.

According to the report, the motorcycle ABS market has limited manufacturers and is characterized by rapid technological innovations. An investment in developing innovative design in terms of size and weight is expected to continue during the forecast period. The possible introduction of new OEMs like Hitachi Automotive and LG Innotek will spur the competition among existing players during the forecast period. However, these factors will benefit customers in terms of cost as well as performance.

“Bosch has the maximum geographical presence due to its leadership position in the ABS market globally. Bosch has a presence in both one-channel and multiple-channel ABS segments, catering to low-powered as well as heavyweight motorcycles. The continuous evolution of ABS for the motorcycle segment in terms of weight and size allowed the company to consolidate its leadership position. Bosch is the first company to focus specifically on ABS for motorcycles,” according to Siddharth Jaiswal, one of the lead automotive electronics research analysts from Technavio.

Continental is another main player in the ABS market. Following Bosch, it also developed one-channel ABS for low-powered motorcycles along with earlier multiple-channel ABS. It has a good presence across all regions and is currently targeting APAC. For instance, Continental partnered with TVS Motors for supplying multiple-channel ABS for its Apache model.


BWI, also known as Beijing West Industries, was founded in 2009 following the acquisition of the chassis division of Delphi. It is headquartered in Beijing, China. The company is a supplier of brake and suspension systems. BWI is an international supplier with manufacturing facilities in China, Poland, the UK, and Mexico. Motorcycle ABS developed by the company is compatible across all sizes of motorcycles and scooters.

In 2015, BWI group and GEFCO UK extended their partnership by two years, which was originally formed in 2010. The company is looking to expand its presence in braking system by expanding its production capacity in North China and investing in new testing facilities particularly for ABS systems to meet the global quality standards.


Bosch was founded in 1886 and is headquartered in Gerlingen, Stuttgart, Germany. The company supplies automotive components. It engages in the manufacturing of automotive components, industrial products, and building products. As of December 2015, Bosch had approximately 375,000 employees in its offices across the world. In the same year, it generated revenues of USD 80.06 billion and spent USD 7.26 billion on R&D.

Mobility solutions: The segment includes the gasoline systems, diesel systems, chassis systems control, electrical drives, starter motors and generators, car multimedia, automotive electronics, automotive aftermarket, and automotive steering.


Continental was founded in 1871 and is headquartered in Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. The company offers products and services for automotive and rubber industries. It engages in the manufacturing of soft rubber products, rubberized fabrics, and solid tires for carriages and bicycles. As of December 2018, Continental had approximately 207,899 employees across the world. It generated revenue of USD 39.23 billion and spent USD 2.72 billion on R&D expenses during FY2015.

Powertrain: This segment integrates powertrain system solutions in various types of vehicles. It has a comprehensive portfolio of the gasoline and diesel systems that include actuators, sensors, and customized electronics.


Honda was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. The company manufactures automobiles, motorcycles, and power equipment that are high in quality and performance. Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines by volume. As of 2018, it had 198,561 employees across the world and generated revenue of USD 130 billion.


ZF TRW is the division of the ZF Friedrichshafen (ZF Group), formed after the acquisition of TRW Automotive by the parent company in 2015. It is headquartered in Livonia, Michigan, US. ZF TRW is a primary developer and producer of the active and passive safety systems with facilities in more than 20 countries.

ZF Group was founded in 1915 and is headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the worldwide supplier of driveline and chassis technology for cars and commercial vehicles, along with specialist plant equipment such as construction equipment. It is also involved in rail, marine, defense, and aviation industries, as well as general industrial applications. As of 2018, ZF Group had 138,269 employees across the world and generated revenue of USD 33.05 billion.
